Brook off Waterside Road

Brook off Waterside Road

It seems like we've had nothing but rain for months which explains the lack of posts recently but thanks to everyone who's kept visiting the blog. The photos above are of the brook that runs under Waterside Road into the river. Fingers crossed, the colour of the water is down to iron washed down from the hills by the downpours...

Summerseat Liberal Club

There are lots of rumours going around as to what's happening with the old Liberal Club. Our favourite is that it's going to be an Italian restaurant but if anyone knows any better do let us know.

Old Engine Shed

The old engine shed just visible above is close to Summerseat railway station and this picture was taken from the platform.

Victorian Lanterns

Victorian Lanterns is an apartment block in the village which I think also used to be a railway building in the past.

How about a Belgian beer café instead? :-)

Serge, good to see you're still lurking around the blogosphere! A Belgian beer cafe would be fabulous for me. They actually had Leffe on draft at the Waterside pub before it closed down although I think you Belgians sneer at the stuff... :-)

Hi Andrew, A few months since I last visited. I've just been having a flick through.
No doubt there are many people who were born & bred in Summerseat that would love to see the Lib back to its former glory. All the Weddings, 21sts, 18ths and christenings etc that took part there. Football teams used to use it for changing and a swift pint after the game.
Some very good snooker players spent many an hour on the green baize.
Good beer, good friends and now all gone.
My Mum was born near to the other drinking hole & former Joshua Hoyles mill. There was another row of houses between the Waterside & Hill Street. Here my Mum was born in a haunted house, so she says.
Cheers
Les

Hi Les, thanks for dropping by. We'll just have to wait and see on the future of the Liberal Club as there doesn't appear to be much actual work going on at the moment.

I guess your Mum's house would have stood on what's now the Waterside pub car park, another building in the village which has been on the market for a long time since it closed down. It's a shame really as we now have to push our baby in his trolley up the hill if we fancy a beer - at least it's downhill on the way back!

For those of you who haven't yet tried it, do check out The Hamers Arms for some fantastic pub food.

My young cousin Chris is one of the chefs at the Hamers. I haven't tried his food yet though.

My wife and I travelled all the way from Mallorca recently to enjoy a mixed grill in The Hamers - it was the best mixed grill ... in the WORLD

So, any news on what's happening to the Waterside? It seems like it has been closed for ages. It would be nice for someone to reopen it as a nice pub/restaurant like it was many years ago, with some live music at the weekends (finishing at sensible times of course)! The village doesn't seem the same without the Waterside.

Hiya Graham,

It must be a couple of years now since The Waterside closed. Apparently it's on the market for £1.5 million and in the current climate it may take a lot longer to sell. It'd be great to see it back open so let's hope it doesn't end up as apartments...
